C.F. Martin & Co. D-41 (1994) – Rosewood Dreadnought with Abalone Appointments – Light Wear from Age
The Martin D-41 has been one of Martin's most admired dreadnoughts since its introduction in 1969. This 1994 example combines rich rosewood tone with stunning abalone details, and over 30 years of playing have given it a beautifully opened-up voice. For anyone searching for a Martin D41 with real character, this is a fine choice.
This D-41 has a solid Sitka spruce top and solid East Indian rosewood back and sides. From 1987, Martin moved the D-41 from non-scalloped to scalloped bracing, so this 1994 model has the scalloped X-bracing that gives a more open and responsive sound. The tone is big, rich and complex, with deep, powerful bass, warm mids and clear, shimmering trebles. Three decades of playing have added warmth, depth and resonance.
The full dreadnought body gives strong projection and volume. That makes the Martin D 41 well suited to bluegrass, folk, country, singer-songwriter accompaniment and studio recording. It sounds just as impressive with flatpicking and strumming as with fingerstyle playing.
The 25.4" long scale gives punch and clarity. The comfortable mahogany low-profile neck with a 1 11/16" nut sits easily in the hand.
Style 41 appointments make this one of Martin's most elegant dreadnoughts:
- abalone top purfling and Style 45 rosette
- abalone hexagon inlays on a bound ebony fingerboard
- a bound headstock with rosewood overlay and vertical abalone C.F. Martin logo
- an ebony bridge
- white binding
- a tortoise pickguard
- gold tuners
- a polished gloss finish
This used Martin D-41 is in very good condition, showing only light wear from age. It's an excellent opportunity to own a vintage-era Martin D-41 from the 1990s, offering premium tonewoods, luxurious abalone detailing and a well-played-in sound.
